FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the FE Civil exam open book?
Yes. The NCEES FE Civil exam is open book — you have access to the FE Reference Handbook during the exam. However, it is only available in digital form on the testing computer. You cannot bring your own materials.
How long is the FE Civil exam?
The FE Civil exam is 5 hours and 20 minutes total: 110 minutes for the first session (55 questions), a 25-minute break, and then 110 minutes for the second session (55 questions). Total: 110 questions.
How hard is the FE Civil exam?
NCEES reports a pass rate of approximately 65-70% for first-time test-takers. The exam is challenging because of the breadth of topics and the time pressure of navigating the handbook efficiently.
Do I need a PE to take the FE Civil exam?
No. The FE is the first step — it comes before the PE. You take the FE after or near graduation from an ABET-accredited engineering program, then work for several years before becoming eligible for the PE exam.
What is the EIT and how does it relate to the FE?
EIT (Engineer-in-Training) is the title given to candidates who pass the FE exam. It is sometimes used interchangeably with 'passing the FE.' Once you have enough qualifying work experience, you can sit for the PE exam.
